ISCM Students in Japan: Academic Excellence, Creativity, and Global Experience
From February 22 to March 11, 2026, a group of students from the Institute of Smart City and Management (ISCM), University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City (UEH), participated in an international exchange program in Japan, focusing on sustainable urban design and the application of artificial intelligence (AI). The program was organized by the Asian Institute of Low Carbon Design (AILCD) at the University of Kitakyushu, bringing together students and scholars from across Asia. Participants included undergraduate students from the Bachelor of Architecture and Urban Design (BAUD) program, as well as graduate students from the Master of Smart and Innovative Urban Management (MSCIM) program at ISCM.

Prior to the design workshop, ISCM students had the opportunity to attend an international scientific conference titled “1925: Art Deco + 2025: AI Deco = 2125: A? Deco – Shaping the Next Age of Beauty, Technology and Urban Life.” The conference served as an academic forum for professors, researchers, and students from Japan, China, Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam to exchange ideas on contemporary issues in sustainable planning, urban design, infrastructure, and heritage conservation. During the conference, two ISCM students, Tran Quynh Chi and Thai Thuy Ngan, were awarded the “Best Presentation” prize for their group research, demonstrating the academic capability, confidence, and global readiness of ISCM students.

Continuing their academic journey, ISCM students joined the UK-SERP International Design Workshop under the theme “Rethink the Future of the Hibikino Campus.” Students were randomly assigned to nine multinational teams to analyze real-world challenges of the Hibikino campus and propose AI-integrated design solutions to enhance learning environments, spatial organization, mobility, and sustainable development. Working in a multicultural setting, ISCM students demonstrated proactiveness, creativity, and strong teamwork skills. As a result, the team of Pham Khoa Quyen and Tran Quang Bao received a “Memorable Mention,” while the team of Nguyen Gia Thang and Thai Thuy Ngan won Third Prize overall. All ISCM participants were awarded certificates upon completing the two-week international program.

In addition to academic activities, the program also offered students the opportunity to explore urban life and environments in Japan. During the trip, the group visited notable landmarks in Kitakyushu such as Kokura Castle, Mojiko Port, local markets, and museums, while also experiencing Japan’s modern public transportation system. Students also visited Mount Sarakura - famous for its panoramic night view of the city - to gain deeper insights into how urban areas can harmoniously integrate infrastructure, landscape, environment, and quality of life. These real-world experiences provided valuable perspectives on urban planning, sustainable development, and smart city operations.

The trip was not only an international exchange program but also a meaningful journey of learning and personal growth for ISCM students. From participating in academic conferences and working in international teams to experiencing Japanese culture and urban life, students expanded their professional knowledge, developed global competencies, and built international networks. This serves as a strong testament to ISCM’s commitment to practice-oriented, internationally integrated, and interdisciplinary education.
