The Sustainable Architectural Design 2026 workshop is jointly organized by the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, and the University of Seville, Spain. The workshop focuses on exploring vernacular knowledge embedded in traditional architecture and examining how these values can be translated into contemporary sustainable architectural design strategies. Through a cross disciplinary and cross cultural learning environment, students will develop design concepts and solutions based on integrated analysis and computer simulations of climate conditions, building form, orientation, spatial configuration, and building envelope, supported by environmental design and simulation tools, with the goal of achieving energy efficient and high quality sustainable architectural solutions.
The workshop is led by Prof.Dr.Arch.José Manuel Almodóvar, Full Professor and Chair at the School of Architecture, University of Seville, Spain. He holds a Ph.D. in Architecture and Computer Simulation applied to historic settlements (2000), an M.Sc. in Renewable Energy (1999), and a B.Sc. in Architecture (1997). He has led research projects funded by the European Union and in collaboration with Ibero-American universities (Mexico, Brazil, Peru). He has also been a Visiting Scholar at several institutions worldwide, including Tsinghua University, Tongji University, Nanjing University, Kobe Design, Columbia University, UCLA, Cal Poly Pomona, and Lawrence Berkeley National Lab. He is the author/co-author of eight books and more than forty peer-reviewed papers in the fields of urban ecology, passive solar design, the built environment, and architectural heritage. He received the City of Seville Award in the Architecture and Energy category. His research bridges vernacular architecture, energy efficiency, and contemporary architectural design, aligning closely with the academic objectives of the workshop.
The workshop features professional guidance and academic support from Dr. Arch. Huynh Van Khang, Lecturer at the Institute of Smart City and Management, University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City (UEH). He is also the founder of Passive Design Laboratory (PDL) and a member of the Architectural Design Association of Nippon (ADAN) and the Architectural Institute of Japan (AIJ). His expertise focuses on climate-responsive architecture, architectural physics simulation, ethnographic research, and cultural heritage conservation. He has received the Good Design Award (Japan) for two consecutive years for passive buildings adapted to hot–humid tropical climates, and has served as a keynote speaker at numerous prestigious academic and professional forums in Vietnam and internationally, including the AIA Global Architecture Conference – Southeast Asia (American Institute of Architects), the Southeast Asian Urbanism Conference in Indonesia, Italian Design Day (IDD) hosted by the Italian Consulate General and the Italian Trade Commission, as well as various international academic and design conferences in Korea, Japan, Australia, and Thailand.
