Public Lecture: Smart Cities and The Digital Economy: Southeast Asia’s Shared Journey

Across Southeast Asia, smart cities are more than experiments with technology—they are entry points into the digital economy. From Thailand to Singapore, Indonesia to Vietnam, cities are finding that digital platforms can boost tourism, streamline mobility, empower local entrepreneurs, and create new channels for investment.
Connect with Dr. Non Arkara, the Institute of Smart City and Management - University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City introduces the Public Lecture titled Smart Cities and The Digital Economy: Southeast Asia’s Shared Journey. With his strong academic background from Harvard, Oxford, and MIT, together with experience from the Digital Economy Promotion Agency (depa) and Smart City Thailand Office under the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society of Thailand, Dr. Non Arkara will share how Thailand linked smart city development with digital economy growth—through governance reforms, leadership programs, and public–private partnerships—and place those lessons in a regional context. With this sharing, we aim not to present a perfect model, but to spark a discussion on how Southeast Asian cities can learn from each other, avoid repeating mistakes, and build digital economies that are inclusive, resilient, and regionally connected.
